About Greg Riddoch
(Defensive Coordinator, Texas
Rangers)
Greg has been involved with the educational
side of sports for more than 45 years. Throughout
his years of experience as a Player, Scout, Manager, and
his 13 years as a Secondary Educational
Administrator, Coach Riddoch has learned that there is ONE primary element that is an absolute
necessity for achieving athletic goals… COMMUNICATION!
Effective communication in sports is simply measured
by one thing….results!
Greg enjoyed his first full season of managing on the
big league level in 1991, leading the San Diego Padres
to an 84-78 mark, the 84 wins equals the second best win
total in the history of the club. Despite major
injuries to the pitching staff and having to use a club
record 48 players, Greg rallied his troops to a 44-35
record after the all-star break, including winning 20 of
the last 30 games at San Diego/Jack Murphy
Stadium. The Padres posted a 42-39 record away
from home, marking the 3rd time the Padres
have finished with a winning record on the road.
The 1991 Padres set a club record for fewest errors in a
season and the highest fielding percentage with a .982
mark.
The 1992 Padres under Greg's guidance, had the best
record in one-run games with a 28-12 mark. In 1992,
Greg was one of four (4) current major league managers with a
career winning record. His team also had a record
38 come from behind victories.
In sports and in life, the ability to succeed depends
strongly upon the ability to "adjust".
Variables and Intangibles that we cannot control often
impact or influence the end result of what was initially
desired. Individuals, who can demonstrate and communicate
these adjustments quickly, have a tremendous advantage
over the competition.
Coach Riddoch recently became the only Manager in
Northwest League to win championships in three (3) different
decades, previously winning with Eugene in 1975 and
1980. Riddoch also serves as an "on-field" coordinator with
the Texas Rangers. His responsibilities include
Defensive and outfield play, Base Running, Performance
Enhancement and Staff Development. He also hold a
BA in Business and a Masters degree in Educational
Administration.
Greg is directly involved with
providing the content and curriculums available to ALL
Coaches Corner USA members!

About
Fernando Montes
(
Director, Strength and Conditioning Coach Texas Rangers)
When
Fernando Montes sees an athlete walk across a locker
room, he doesn't see an investment in cleats. He sees
another human being trying to reach his or her
potential.
After 10 years with the Cleveland Indians, 2003
marked Fernando's first year with the Texas Rangers. His
office sits in a back room in the clubhouse. This is
where he plans player workouts for everyday throughout a
major league baseball season. He doesn't mind
being behind the scenes; in fact, he says he gets the
most work done during games as the locker room is less
than active with quiet time being a premium.
Simply helping others to improve the quality of their
lives fuels his personal motivation and fire. It all
comes down to one basic thought, "at days end, did
I make someone's life better today!" In
Montes' case, the improvement comes in a variety of
ways, increasing a player's flexibility, sharpening a
pitcher's concentration skills, monitoring a players
physical progress in rehabilitation or even tweaking a
players diet in order to deliver a higher level of
energy.
When it comes to training methods, Montes likes to
think outside the box. Montes will often tailor his
workout regimens depending on the player's position.
Some players, particularly veterans, will have a
long-standing routine that Montes tweaks to his
specifications. If you are an infielder or
Outfielder, your routine will contain a higher level of
physical exercises, than they would mental exercises. If
Fernando is working with a pitcher, he will structure
his workouts to fit in according to the hurler's normal
routine for starts and appearances.
"We live in a society that doesn't seem to
understand and accept the recovery aspect related with
playing sports," he said. "We're very fast
paced and expectant of immediate result. My biggest
conflict with players is to get them to understand that
every day, at the end of day, you NEED to prepare your
body for the next days load of physical activity."
"Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint,"
says Montes. "In order to achieve positive results
you must lay out a plan, think it through clearly and
commit to it. Please, remember that you will need to
pick your battles in order to win the war!"
Fernando Montes brings a variety of sports related
experience to our staff and we welcome your questions
and inquiries into how we can assist you to achieve your
goals and objectives! To

over 25 years of fast pitch pitching at both the national
and international level, Mike has a wealth of experience
that very few players can match. He has played in 6
quadrennial International Softball Federation World

the USA capturing 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 bronze medal
along the way. He has played in such countries as New
Zealand, Canada, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala,
Dominican Republic, the Philippines and South Africa.
In 2002 White was named as the ASA's Player of the Year
at the age of 41 after he helped lead the USA team to
it's first Gold medal in 14 years at the Pan American
games qualifier in Guatemala City.
On the national scene his record is just as
impressive with 5 ASA club titles and 5 International
Softball Congress (ISC) club titles. Individual honors
include ASA MV Pitcher awards in 1992, 1997 and 2002,
the ISC MVP pitcher award in 1987 and 2002. Add to this
his 9 time ASA All American and 9 ISC All World team
selections there is little doubt to his abilities as one
the games top pitchers.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Mike learned the
craft of fast pitch pitching at the early age of 14. He
moved to the USA in 1985 to attend Mount Mercy College
in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.. Mike earned his BA in Marketing
and Management and later used his degree to open and own
a Play It Again Sports franchise for 12 years in Sioux
City, Iowa..
Over the years Mike has worked numerous clinics and
individual lessons. He worked with the 1996 Olympic Gold

pitching advisor. Most recently in the fall of 2003, the
Greek National Olympic team flew him to Hawaii for their
team camp to work with their pitchers and for batting
practice. Mike has also been involved with Softball New
Zealand in promoting softball and coaching clinics
through out the country.
Eager to use his softball knowledge at the women's
college level, Mike accepted an offer from the Duck's at
the University of Oregon to be an assistant coach in the
powerhouse PAC 10 Conference. A unanimous pick to finish
last in the conference the 2003 Ducks surprised everyone
with a 3rd place finish in the conference and were only
one game shy of a trip to the College World Series.
